No Longer Human - the last novel and the only semi-biography by Osamu Dazai before his suicide - exposes the utmost vulnerability and despair of the author.
The book follows Yozo Oba, a soul whose light was dimmed too soon in life and therefore feels fundamentally disconnected from other people. He turns himself into a clown, using humour and emotional detachment to mask his fear and confusion. This façade works on the surface, but internally he spirals into anxiety, addiction, and self-destruction.
